Our Stepping Stones for New Scots program supports asylum seekers and refugees, many of whom come from war-torn countries and have experienced trauma from a young age. The program is designed to build trust, using this as a key foundation in helping them stabilise their mental health.
Stepping Stones for New Scots was first introduced in October after we recognised a mental health crisis in the hotels housing asylum seekers. The program guides the cohort through a series of six sessions which gradually introduce trauma-informed practices to help manage their emotions and feelings. The sessions included a mix of activities, including fitness sessions and video games which helped build a small, safe, and supportive community where we shared our feelings and explored strategies to stay within our window of tolerance. This group has remained well-connected, and we’ve seen significant positive changes from the first session to the last.
The program concluded with a festive Christmas card-making workshop which brought the joy and spirit of the festive season to life. The handmade Christmas cards are now available for purchase at £2.50 each, we welcome any additional donations which can be made here. All proceeds, including profits from the card sales, will be used to buy Christmas presents for our cherished mini-community. We are excited to start our second cohort in the New Year and continue to work towards positive outcomes.
